The Monitors are an American garage punk band from Cleveland, Ohio. Known for a raw and energetic sound rooted in Northeast Ohio’s underground rock scene, the band has maintained a low-profile but long-running presence, issuing recordings across multiple decades.
History
The Monitors first emerged in the early 1980s Cleveland punk community, a scene known for its abrasive, DIY aesthetic and a long lineage of influential underground acts. Their earliest known release is the 1981 single "Trouble" / "Rip Your Dress", which captured their early garage-punk sound and established them as part of the post-punk/garage continuum developing in the region.
After a period of lineup activity throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the Monitors resurfaced with full-length releases during the 2000s. These later works reflect a heavier, fuller production style while still retaining the grit of their early singles.
The band remained active in the Cleveland area, playing locally and releasing material independently.
