History

Jefferson Airplane was formed in San Francisco in 1965 by vocalist Marty Balin and guitarist Paul Kantner, who drew other musicians from the local folk scene into the lineup.<ref> Jefferson Airplane, TeachRock. Retrieved 2025-12-04.

</ref> Balin’s tenor vocals, songwriting, and artistic direction shaped the band’s earliest material, including their debut album Jefferson Airplane Takes Off, and he remained a central figure through Volunteers (1969).

With the addition of singer Grace Slick, the group moved into its most commercially successful era, releasing several landmark albums on which Balin contributed prominently as lead singer, writer, and arranger. His performances and compositions were central to the band’s sound through Volunteers (1969).

Balin remained with Jefferson Airplane through 1969's Volunteers. He left the group in 1971 and later returned for the band's 1989 reunion album.
