Jefferson Airplane was a pioneering American psychedelic rock band formed in San Francisco in 1965. History (Focused on Marty Balin)
Marty Balin founded Jefferson Airplane in 1965, bringing together the initial lineup and helping establish the group as one of the central figures of the emerging San Francisco sound.<ref> Jefferson Airplane, Wikipedia. Retrieved 2025-12-04.
</ref> His tenor vocals, songwriting, and artistic direction shaped the band's earliest material, including their debut album Jefferson Airplane Takes Off.
With the addition of singer Grace Slick, the group moved into its most commercially successful era, releasing several landmark albums on which Balin contributed prominently as lead singer, writer, and arranger. His performances and compositions were central to the band’s sound through Volunteers (1969).
Balin departed the group in 1971 and did not perform on Bark (1971), making Volunteers his final album of the classic period. He later rejoined the band for their 1989 reunion album.
