Friction was an American punk / proto-punk band from Cleveland, Ohio.

History

Friction was part of the mid-1970s Cleveland underground rock scene. The band featured guitarist and songwriter Peter Laughner alongside Sue Schmidt, Debbie Schmidt, and drummer Anton Fier. Their sound bridged the gap between raw garage rock and the emerging punk style, and they are often mentioned in connection with other influential Cleveland-area acts of the era.

The group’s lifetime was short and most of their activity pre-dated widespread independent releases, so documentation of their gigs and recordings is limited. Live tapes, rehearsal recordings, and later archival appearances circulate among collectors of the Cleveland proto-punk scene.

Members

  • Peter Laughner – guitar, vocals
  • Sue Schmidt – guitar, vocals
  • Debbie Schmidt – bass
  • Anton Fier – drums

Discography

Friction did not release a widely distributed studio album during their brief existence. Known material is primarily live or archival, appearing on tapes and occasional compilations associated with the Cleveland underground.
