Color Me Gone Akron, Ohio 1982

History

Formed in 1982 by ex-Hammer Damage / Dead Boys guitarist George Cabaniss, this Akron group settled on a singer after record producer and Akron native Liam Sternberg (who had previously discovered Rachel Sweet) hooked them up with local lounge singer Marti Jones. Within a year Sternberg landed the group with A&M Records, who released their debut (and finale), a six-song EP that blends REM-like folk with '60s pop.

After breaking up, the band performed with a new singer under the name Village Idiots. Meanwhile, the label signed Jones directly, resulting in three records produced by future husband (and noted producer) Don Dixon that impressively featured Jones' voice, but failed to catch on commercially. A fourth record on a new label (RCA), Any Kind of Lie, featured Jones-Dixon as a songwriting team and a direct, pop approach. But the sales didn't improve, leaving Jones without a label. After retiring to Canton, Jones resurfaced with My Long-Haired Life earlier this year.
